The idea of an inevitable conflict between science and religion was decisively challenged by John Hedley Brooke in his classic Science and Religion: Some Historical Perspectives (Cambridge, 1991). Almost two decades on, Science and Religion: New Historical Perspectives revisits this argument and asks how historians can now impose order on the complex and contingent histories of religious engagements with science. Bringing together leading scholars, this volume explores the history and changing meanings of the categories 'science' and 'religion'; the role of publishing and education in forging and spreading ideas; the connection between knowledge, power and intellectual imperialism; and the reasons for the confrontation between evolution and creationism among American Christians and in the Islamic world. A major contribution to the historiography of science and religion, this book makes the most recent scholarship on this much misunderstood debate widely accessible.

The Journal of Religion is one of the publications by which the Divinity School of The University of Chicago seeks to promote critical, hermeneutical, historical, and constructive inquiry into religion. While expecting articles to advance scholarship in their respective fields in a lucid, cogent, and fresh way, the Journal is especially interested in areas of research with a broad range of implications for scholars of religion, or cross-disciplinary relevance. The Editors welcome submissions in theology, religious ethics, and philosophy of religion, as well as articles that approach the role of religion in culture and society from a historical, sociological, psychological, linguistic, or artistic standpoint. Articles that present highly specialized research in limited areas of inquiry may be considered provided that their findings, in the judgment of the Editors, have significance for a wider readership. Submissions may not be concurrently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Criticism of monastic life by one of Europe's major Renaissance figures. In his letter Against Monastic Life (1514-17) Andrea Alciato, an Italian jurist and writer famous for his Emblemata, urges his friend Bernardus Mattius to reconsider his choice of monastic life. Alciato makes his argument by criticizing religious superstition, the Church's hierarchy, and monastic practices, particularly the Franciscans' hypocrisy, wealth, and divisiveness. Instead, he defends a stoic, civic humanism. Due to the troubled history of this unique manuscript and the inadequacies of the two subsequent editions,

This anthology brings together contributions from the fields of politics, theology, and the history of science. In his essay, E. Lohse explores the beginnings of early Christian literature. O. Kaiser examines correspondence between the biblical philologists Heinrich Ewald and Herman Hupfeld. W. Künne documents Goethe's attachment to the northern Italian city of Bolzano, and W. Ludwig analyzes the Turkish and Persian Latin of the Epistolae Turcicae. In the volume's final contribution, Karin Reich analyzes the exchange of letters between the mathematician Gauss and his friend and biographer, the geologist Wolfgang Sartorius von Waltershausen.
